The Dallas Museum of Art was founded by Dr. Charles L. Goodnight in 1895, who envisioned a museum that would be a “temple of culture” and a “home for the arts.” The museum originally started with a collection of paintings on the walls of an existing home before it moved to its current location in 1903. The first director was Samuel Blythe, who is regarded as the creator of Dallas’ cultural identity. By 1935, the museum had outgrown its space, so they bought land and built themselves an impressive building that is still standing today! In 1956, when it became clear that more space was needed for the growing collections and library, then Director George D. Robinson designed what would become known as “the Renzo Piano Building.”
In addition to being one of the oldest museums in Texas, it has been influential in shaping Dallas’ cultural scene. In 1992, it led the way for new museums like Modern Art Museum at Fort Worth and Nasher Sculpture Center
