The University of Texas at Austin has a rich history that goes back nearly 250 years. In 1839, Stephen F. Austin founded the University of Texas in order to provide education for Texans and non-Texans alike. The university was originally located in Houston with only 30 students when it first opened its doors to students. It was also the first coeducational institution west of the Mississippi River and was the first public university in Texas.
In 1876, alumni from across the country helped fund a new school building on campus. Today, UT Austin is home to 68 buildings on its current campus spanning over 500 acres of land at its main campus site. The oldest building on campus is known as Old Main, which was completed in 1876 and recently underwent extensive renovations in 2016 that allowed for more classrooms and labs for students to use for their study purposes.
The University of Texas at Austin began on August 1, 1839, when the Republic of Texas signed a treaty with Mexico to purchase land for $10 million and establish a college. The school was renamed the “University of Texas” on February 16, 1876 after it became an independent state. The school has seen many changes since its early days, as well as numerous additions and expansions to the campus. In 1905-1906, over 10 acres were added to the UT campus by way of a bond referendum that brought more buildings and classrooms to the campus. Around this time, in 1908, the Main Building was built and today still serves as one of UT Austin’s most important landmarks. In 1912-1913, President James Hogg oversaw the construction of Old Main which is now home to the first ever home football stadium in Texas. Since then, Old Main has undergone many renovations and expansions including a major renovation in 1997 that included a new library and other improvements.
The University of Texas continues to grow not only through building new structures but also through fostering innovation. UT Austin is currently working on developing its own online learning program called “UT Online.” This program will allow students anywhere in Texas who qualify for admission into any degree program offered by UT Austin (excluding law) to take courses online without taking any time away from their regular class schedule. Additionally, UT Online will have no tuition cost associated with it because students can self-pay or receive financial aid according to their
UT Austin is one of the largest universities in the United States. With more than 50,000 students enrolled, it is also the fourth-largest institution in the nation. The University of Texas at Austin offers over 49 undergraduate and graduate degrees. Notable programs include English, Journalism, Business Administration, Physical Therapy, Kinesiology (Sport Science), Dance, and Public Health to name a few.

UT Austin is home to a variety of buildings, all with their own unique history and character.
