The Battle of Midway

The Battle of Midway is one of the most famous battles in history, and it was a pivotal victory for the Allied forces. It was fought between June 3 and June 6, 1942, and it helped turn the war to the Allied forces’ favor.

The battle occurred after Japan had been dominating the Pacific theater of WWII with their naval advances. The United States wanted to stop them – they wanted to make sure that Japan never made it to Australia or Hawaii. The incredible thing about this battle is that it happened on a remote island at the time – an island that few people knew existed.

The Japanese had more ships and planes than we did, but our planes were more advanced than theirs. They also didn’t expect us to have so many planes – they thought we would only be able to bring so many due to distance from an air base. We sent almost three times as many planes as they did on ships!

On June 4th, America found out that Japan was near Midway Island and decided to attack early instead of waiting for reinforcements from Pearl Harbor. Japan had taken over a part of Midway Island by then and already sunk some of our ships there (including the USS Yorktown).

That night, American fighter pilots flew off their carriers and destroyed four Japanese aircraft carriers in two waves (in less than two hours!). This left nearly all of Japan’s fighting power gone!

On June 7th, Admiral Yamamoto ordered all remaining Japanese vessels

Midway’s History

The Midway Museum was constructed as a way to share this pivotal moment in history with the people who visit. The museum is located on the site of the Battle of Midway, and is home to the USS Yorktown–a WWII aircraft carrier that played an integral part in the victory at Midway. Visitors can tour through the ship and explore how it operated during the war. There’s even a re-creation of what life would have been like for those sailors aboard.

It’s easy to see why this museum is so important–it gives visitors a glimpse into what life was like for those who fought against Japan in World War II. It also provides an unparalleled educational experience for anyone interested in military history or naval warfare.

The exhibits and film presentations at the Inn of Chicago, our hotel near the museum, cover a wide range of topics. You’ll learn about some of the most famous battles in American history, like Pearl Harbor, or you can explore how American culture was influenced by a war fought 3,000 miles away. Don’t forget to check out the exhibit on Japanese kamikaze pilots. They may have lost World War II, but they were still an impressive enemy that took down many American ships.
